Russian T Shirts – 5 Examples of Soviet T Shirts From Russia With Love
Russian t shirts are an extremely popular genre of tee shirt, especially amongst university students. Soviet t shirts, such as the infamous CCCP t shirts, have become iconic in a similar way to the infamous Che Guevara t shirt. At one time, they would have been worn in the West as a sort of anti-establishment political statement, however, nowadays they have become more of a fashion statement rather than a political one.
Russian t shirts come in many different styles, such as tourism shirts featuring famous Moscow landmarks, nationalistic shirts based around the Russian flag Veganism and those tee shirts that consist of words or phrases written in the Cyrillic alphabet. However, perhaps the most interesting type of Soviet t shirts are those that are inspired by propaganda imagery from the Communist era, especially during the Stalinist regime.
Below I have chosen five of my favorite types of Russian t shirts, which every self-respecting student should own.
Aeroflot
These Russian t shirts are based around the famous “Aeroflot” logo, with a hammer and sickle at its center and some imitation air-plane wings on the sides. The Soviet t shirts have an inscription underneath the logo, which reads: “AEROFLOT” (written in the Cyrillic alphabet) followed by “Soviet Airlines” (written in the Latin alphabet).
“Glory to Warrior the Winner”
These authentic Soviet t shirts are screen printed in Moscow and depict a famous Soviet propaganda poster from the Stalin era. The poster includes the dates 1941 to 1945, which was the period during which the USSR was at war with Germany. Underneath the dates is the picture of a young, smiling Soviet soldier who has medals on his chest.
Yuri Gagarin
The Yuri Gagarin t shirt is another popular style of Soviet t shirt, which celebrates the legacy of the first man in space. These Russian t shirts, which are based around a print of Yuri Gagarin in a cosmonaut helmet, are actually imported direct from Russia.
Mockba
This Russian t shirt displays a colorful picture of the world famous St. Basil’s Cathedral, with the word “MOCKBA” printed just below it. “MOCKBA” is of course “MOSCOW” written in the Cyrillic alphabet.
USSR
The CCCP t shirt has become a brand in its own right, in a similar way to Che Guevara t shirts, and is probably the most famous of all types of Soviet t shirts. “CCCP” is actually the Latin alphabet version of the Russian acronym for the Soviet Union.
